#2 Week – GVG Enterprises

This week, the Global Video Game Enterprise is Naughty Dog!

What’s GVG Enterprises?

NaughtyDog

I’ve just finished The Last of Us, so I chose Naughty Dog for the second Global Video Game Enterprise!

The developing studio began on 1984, working on garage titles such as Keef the Thief (1989 ), Rings of Power ( 1991 ) or Way of the Warrior ( 1995 ). On 1994, their work was focused on the beginning of the Crash Bandicoot franchise, for the PlayStation gaming system.

Crash Bandicoot ( August 31, 1996 ), for PlayStation, features the marsupial Crash, a failed super animal soldier experience, and his attempt to rescue Tawna from the hands of the evil Dr. Neo Cortex. A 3D platform game with boss fights. For many it’s an enjoyable adventure.

Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back ( October 31, 1997 ), for PlayStation, brings some modifications like double jump, slide and body slam. There’s also the Warp Room section that gives the player the ability to choose which of the 5 levels he/ she wants to play. Cortex is back and uses Crash to search for Crystals that will help the evil Dr. to rule the world.

Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped ( November 3, 1998 ), for PlayStation, gives the player the control of either Crash or Coco. After so may defeats, Uka Uka, the true villain, send Cortex and Dr. N. Trophy through a time machine to gather the lost Crystals from the previous game. Aku Aku leads Crash and Coco to the time machine so they can stop the evil minds, once and for all.

Crash Team Racing ( September 30, 1999 ), for PlayStation, is a racing game that brings friends and foes together so they can reveal who’s the best driver in the world and send the challenging alien Nitros Oxide back to his planet. The reason: to save the planet from becoming a giant parking lot. You can play with 15 well-known characters, on 5 different areas and defeat bosses on the Adventure mode.

On 2001Naughty Dog became a subsidiary of Sony Computer Entertainment.

Jak and Daxter: The Percursor Legacy ( December 4, 2001 ), for PlayStation 2, is a game that features 2 young friends, Jak and Daxter, on the search of a way to bring Daxter, now an otter weasel, to his original form. In their adventure they’ll find that the world is in peril. The characters will be travelling around an open 3D continent, in search of Power Cells.

Jak II ( October 13, 2003 ), for PlayStation 2, is a darker and more urban game than the first. Being more combat focus and having the corrupted Haven City as the principal playable area, it gives a narrative of revolution and revenge, in an adventure to save the world once more. After the first game, Jak and Daxter find themselves in a strange different world, where Jak was imbued with dark Echo. The friends join a small resistance team  in search of a opportunity for revenge against the leader of Haven City and the evil Metal Heads, in this open 3D living city, with vehicles for fast travel.

Jak 3  ( November 09, 2004 ), for PlayStation 2, continues the life of Jak and Daxter in Haven City, that is now a war-torn city due to battles between the Crimson Guard, the Metal Heads and the Deathbots. Jak and Daxter are exiled by the new leader of Haven City, featuring the Wastelands, Spargus City and Haven City as playable areas. A new thirst for revolution appears, as does the wish to end the war on Haven City. It’s a new adventure of the two friends, in a bigger open 3D world, with more combat features and vehicles, for a safety travel.

Jak X: Combat Racing  ( October 18, 2005 ), for PlayStation 2, continues after the events of Jak 3. The will of an old, deceased and well-known character brings a request to the duo and their friends to win the Kras City racing tournament for him. In this free for all combat race, there’s 2 playable modes: Adventure and Exhibit. Jak is the only playable racer in Adventure mode, but you can play as 15 characters in Exhibit, who require more than completing the game to unlock.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune ( November 19, 2007 ), for PlayStation 3, is a third-personaction-adventure game in which we play as Nathan Drake in his search for the El Dorado. Claiming to be a descendant of the explorer Sir Francis Drake, Nathan and his partner Sully follow the clues written in the diary of Francis Drake, leading to El Dorado. It features puzzles and gun play combat, relying on a cover mechanic, and lots of vegetation.

Uncharted: Among Thieves ( October 13, 2009 ), for PlayStation 3, continues to follow the adventures of Nathan Drake, now in search of a mythical treasure linked to Marco Polo. With flashbacks and new and old characters, this new adventure takes Nathan to Borneo, Turkey and Nepal. With urban and snowy areas, it brings back the puzzles, playable action moments, and gun play combat, in another third-person, action-adventure game. It also features a multiplayer online mode.

Uncharted: Drake’s Deception ( November 1, 2011 ), for PlayStation 3, takes Nathan Drake to a more survival setting, while searching for the Iram of the Pillars, known as the Atlantis of the Sands. With a much more comprehension of the past of Nathan and Sully, we continue Nathan’s harsh and epic adventures, this time against a much more dangerous organization. The game brings an updated melee combat, as it follows the previous third-person, action-adventure build, with an updated multiplayer online mode.

The Last of Us ( June 14, 2013 ), for PlayStation 3, opens with a post-apocalyptic world, where a parasitic fungus, that infects the brain of ants, spreads to humans, leading to a large portion of the human race becoming monster-like creatures called Infected or Clickers, depending on the infection rate. We can play as both Joel, a survivor from the old world, trying to adapt to the destruction and madness that surrounds him, and Ellie, a daughter of the new world, living among the ruins of a gone and careless reality. It’s a third-person, action-adventure game, featuring a crafting mechanic and resources management, with great focus on the survival in its gameplay.

A funny fact is that Naughty Dog have been focused on making games for PlayStation, side by side with Insomniac Games, the creators of Spyro the Dragon, for PS, Ratchet and Clank, for PS2, and Resistance, for PS3.

Uncharted: A Thief’s End will be the next step for this historical game development studio, which I expect to have racing in some way, due to the fact that it’s the 4th and maybe the last installment on the Uncharted series, made by Naughty Dog. It must be a rule somewhere in their documents.

We all can expect a great and epic ending of the Nathan Drake’s adventures, due to the quality of their past games.

I’ve played all the Crash Bandicoot’s games with a cousin, but only scratched the surface of the Jak and Daxter franchise.

On the PS3, I’ve enjoyed the Uncharted games, each moment of action and challenging combats, and I’m waiting for the fourth installment with a happy smile.

The Last of Us was, with no doubt, one of the most intense and loving games I’ve played, with a desire to play more as Ellie, while exploring the ruins of what, for her, is only the frame of the new harsh world.
